A Bloody and Lasting War

Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Ephesians 6:12

The apostle Paul does not choose his words lightly. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he selects a word that demands our attention: wrestle. This is not passive resistance. This is not distant warfare. This is not theoretical theology. This is close combat—hand to hand, face to face, exhausting, relentless struggle.

Paul does not say we debateobserve, or avoid. He says we wrestle.

Knowing the Real Enemy
Before we can understand the nature of the battle, we must understand the enemy. Paul is clear: our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The real war is not political, social, cultural, or personal. People are not the enemy—no matter how hostile, misguided, or opposed they may be.
Behind visible conflict stands an invisible hierarchy of evil:
  • Principalities
  • Powers
  • Rulers of darkness
  • Wicked spirits in high places
These are organized, intelligent, strategic forces with one aim: to destroy the work of God in the life of the believer.
Satan is not omnipresent, nor is he foolish. He does not waste his forces. He concentrates his attacks where the threat to his kingdom is greatest.

Why Some Believers Face Fiercer Attacks

There are many who wear the label “Christian,” but few who actively live as disciples of Jesus Christ. Scripture, experience, and spiritual reality all point to this truth: Satan is not threatened by Christians in name only.

Those who have been made right with God—who understand grace, walk in obedience, take up the cross, and actively draw others to Christ—become targets. When someone truly grasps what Christ has done for them and begins to live it out, Satan responds with intensified opposition. The enemy does not go on the offensive against spiritual complacency. He goes after fruitfulness.
If you are wrestling—really wrestling—it may not be a sign of failure. It may be evidence that your life matters in the kingdom of God.

A Bloody and Lasting War
One writer from centuries past put it plainly: “Your state in this life is set out by the word wrestling.” This is not the kind of message that fills stadiums or sells books. “Come to Jesus and enter a bloody and lasting war” does not fit modern marketing strategies. Yet it is deeply biblical. Jesus never hid the cost of discipleship. He spoke of crosses, suffering, persecution, and endurance. Salvation is free—but following Christ is costly. This war is bloody because it involves real pain, sacrifice, and endurance. It is lasting because it does not end until our earthly race is finished.

Wrestling Is Personal
Wrestling differs from other forms of combat in one critical way: it is intensely personal. In war, a soldier may fight briefly and then retreat. He may escape injury because the enemy’s fire is spread across many targets. But wrestling allows no such distance. The opponent is focused on one individual at a time.
In spiritual warfare, the enemy studies you.
  • Your weaknesses
  • Your past
  • Your fears
  • Your habits
He singles you out—not to overpower you by strength, but to exhaust you by pressure. This is why Scripture never calls us to fight in our own power.

Strength That Is Not Our Own
Paul anchors Ephesians 6:12 in Ephesians 6:10: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.” The phrase “be strong” literally means be strengthened. It is not a command to muster inner resolve, but to receive divine empowerment. This battle cannot be fought with:
  • Human willpower
  • Emotional strength
  • Religious activity
  • Self-discipline alone
If we attempt to wrestle Satan in our own strength, we will lose. Every time. But when we enter the conflict clothed in God’s strength, relying on God’s force, and trusting God’s might, the outcome is already decided.

The Armor Makes the Difference
God does not send us into this battle unprotected. Every piece of the armor of God is essential—not optional, not symbolic, but vital. The armor does not eliminate the fight; it ensures the victory.
Victory is not found in avoiding the struggle, but in standing firm in the power of His might.

A Call to Faithful Warfare
This devotional is not meant to frighten, but to clarify. If you belong to Christ and are living for Him, opposition should not surprise you. Wrestling is part of the calling.
The good news is this:
  • The strength is God’s
  • The armor is God’s
  • The victory is God’s
Our role is faithfulness. So let us not grow weary. Let us not retreat into comfort or compromise. Let us not misunderstand the battle or misidentify the enemy.
As Paul exhorted Timothy, so we remind ourselves today:
“Let us war a good warfare.”
