Who do you think are the two witnesses in the book of Revelation?
The identities of the two witnesses in the book of Revelation are most commonly a combination of Enoch, Elijah, or Moses. Among the “experts”, the consensus is Elijah and Moses. Why? Because they’re the two who appeared with Jesus on the Mount of Configuration. This conclusion comes with zero scriptural validation.
It’s pure speculation, as are most all of the conclusions in the Daniel 70th week pre-tribulation theories. Which I refer to as the
Christian Science Fiction Doctrine (CSFD).
In my ministry work on Twitter at @FictionDoctrine, I often come against a very popular proponent of the CSFD named Kirk. Now, I like Kirk a lot. I think he’s a great guy with a big heart. He’s certainly longsuffering and patient with me hounding him. Nevertheless, as long as he allows, I will be using his staunch stance on the CSFD to showcase to the onlooking audience just how unscriptural and dangerous it is. Dangerous because it leads Christians to believe a lie and left ill prepared for the coming of the Lord.
I’d hate to be on the hook for doing that.
Here we see Kirk put out his statements about the two witnesses that are a mainstay throughout CSFD eschatological teachings.

Let’s look what Revelation 11 actually says about the two witnesses:
Now we see what Kirk is referring too. The two witnesses:
- Are wearing sackcloth garments
- Are given power to prophesy for one thousand two hundred and sixty days (or what Kirk says is 3 1/2 years because he’s been taught in this verse a day = a 24 hour day, when we know using scripture to verify, a prophetical day = a year. But I digress)
- They’ll breath fire out of their mouth to destroy anyone trying to hurt them
- They can control the weather
- They will be killed by the Beast (Who Kirk calls the Antichrist. See my website about what antichrist is here)
- They’ll lay dead in the street for a quick 3 1/2 days
- Everyone on earth will have a party a celebrate their murders
- Then God will resurrect them and they will stand again scaring the bejesus out of everyone
- Then God raptures the two guys up to heaven
Yep, those two witnesses are powerful terrifying dudes. Right?
Well, when you apply scripture, the CSFD goes terribly off the rails. Did you read verse 4?
Revelation 11:4 “These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.”
Huh? That’s weird. The two witnesses are two miracle working men described as “olive trees and candlesticks”? Can we verify anywhere in scripture where men are described this way? No, we can’t, but we can find scripture to verify what the “Olive Trees and Candlesticks” are. In fact we don’t have to look very far. We see in Revelation chapter one, Jesus tells us directly what the candlesticks are:
Rev 1:20 “The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.“
This verse makes it very clear a “candlestick” is a church. We also read in this chapter those seven candlestick churches are the very converted Jewish Christian churches Jesus is writing the book of Revelation too.
What about the “Olive Trees”? We read in Romans 11 the Olive tree represents Israel and the Jews descended from Abraham.
The two witnesses are the Jewish and Christian churches!
Believing what you’re told without using scripture to verify is how Kirk ended up preaching the CSFD. And I’ll be the first to tell you, that’s hard work for the average guy or gal. I don’t have those skills, I don’t read and write Hebrew and Greek, but, I have a pastor who does. Who lays it out so I can check his work and verify it myself.
Here would be a great place for you to start learning the right way.
Below is part one of a five part series about the “Two Witnesses” which will (by a process of elimination), layout the scriptural case for “who” they are and then point to how all the attributes listed in Revelation 11 apply to them. Including how this event is historical, it’s not in a future magical last seven year time frame.
